Tyler/Lindale is Where We Began A New Decade

  • Longtime supporters of local bands, inspired us to dance into the decade with a few great bands.

To end one decade, and start the next, we rolled on I-20 West out of Louisiana and further into the piney woods region of East Texas.

In our spot at Tyler Oaks RV Resort – After unhooking the Jeep Cherokee, and setting up the TomsMaHauL motorhome, we were ready to check out the surrounding area.

A month ahead of time, we booked our reservation at Tyler Oaks RV Resort, located to the west of Tyler, and merely minutes from Lindale, Texas. The rv park is located just a few miles south of I-20, which is far enough away from overnight highway noise, but close enough to the places that we intended to explore. The rv park was easy to get into, and out of, and we experienced a level rv spot with good power supply. The water was likely good, as many rvers that were coming (during the 3 days that we were there) were hooking up to the park’s water supply. We used our on-board water tank and pump, as there was a possibility of overnight freezing temperatures, and our motorhome tanks & plumbing are heated areas. 9 times out of 10, we use our on-board water supply, even during warmer months. If we’re planning to use the motorhome washing machine, Tom will hook up to a park’s water supply & pull out the gray tank lever during the clothes washing. This park offers many ammenities & activities, and is a well-groomed area, with entry & exit gates. We had no issues using the provided entry gate code, once we returned from a New Years Eve night event in Lindale. We took advantage of the rv park’s game room, and had fun playing air hockey. There was a foosball table and billiards table in the game room. We checked out the excercise equipment room, and found it to be well cared for, with plenty to offer. The facility offers a pool, frisbee golf course & more. The staff was welcoming when we arrived and entered the office and nice lobby area to check in.

Shortly after setting up in our rv spot, we went to a nearby Cracker Barrel for an early dinner. Thanks to sister Mary for the Cracker Barrel gift card (Christmas gift). We’re proud of our LSU Tigers for making it to the college football national championship game & other awards (Heisman Trophy, Coach of the Year & more) so Tom , proudly, wore one of his LSU caps to (in Tom’s words) “represent”.

After checking out some sights to see in the area, we found that the Old Mill Pond Museum would be closed during our time in this region. We will plan to visit this museum on a future journey to this area. We did take a ride in the Jeep to Tyler State Park, to see if it would be a place that we’d want to visit in the future. There are plenty of rv spots around this spring-fed lake. In some areas, it may be a bit of challenge for larger rvs (aka “big rigs”), but do-able. There were cabins & shelter areas, along with plenty of tent campers. This place was packed with rv campers (even in the winter) so booking ahead would be a good idea. We may try to make it, at some point in the future.

Tom drove the Jeep into Lindale, as we explored the town where it is made obvious that it’s the hometown of popular singer-songwriter, Miranda Lambert.

Located on a Lindale street that is named “Miranda Lambert Way” is a huge area with stores, restaurants, bar, entertainment venues & more. Tom stands in front The Cannery.
Teri takes a seat at a display, The PInk Pistol is one of many locations along Miranda Lambert Way in Lindale.
Tom jumped at the opportunity to pose at this old vehicle door display in Lindale.

The plan for this journey was to enjoy New Years Eve, supporting a few of our great regional/local bands.

On the left of the Brisket Love BBQ & Icehouse stage, is the band equipment set-up for Lee Mathis & Brutally Handsome, while on the right is the set-up for the band Teazur. The bands rotated performances throughout the New Years Eve evening, with non-stop music.

We had booked our seats in advance, for New Year’s Eve at Brisket Love BBQ & Icehouse on the outskirts of Lindale. We enjoyed some of the best BBQ ribs, brisket & other food. The wait staff, and other workers, were very pleasant. We enjoyed the conversations with the owner (Craig), as well as some of the staff. Jerry was an employee that kept checking on us, and we took his offer for a tour of the place.

To the left of Tom is one of the BBQ pit masters, Bailey, and to the right of Tom is Jerry (who was the nice guy that toured us through the facility).
Bailey feeds wood into one of the Brisket Love BBQ pits. Teri said that the pit area had a “Top Gun feel about it”. Craig, the business owner smiled & said “Yes it does”, as Teri noticed that each pit had a metal etching on top. One pit was named “Maverick” and the other pit was named “Goose”.

Brisket Love BBQ & Icehouse is, what we call, a “do-over” (meaning we shall return at some point). We wish Craig luck, when he competes in Magnolia, Arkansas at the Blossom Festival & World Championship Steak Cook-Off. We’ve attended that festival in the past, and once we get to those pages in Teri’s spiral notebook of our 20+ years of rving, Tom will do some editing and post one of those adventures in our Journal section.

We enjoyed 3 days & nights, to end one decade, and begin another. We share some other notes below….

Additional Notes

Along with Tyler Oaks RV Resort, another place that we’ve stayed in this area in the past, is the Kiepersol Winery rv park known as Bushman’s RV Park (south of Tyler), when we enjoyed the tour of the vineyards and winery, as well as the restaurant (we’ve been there a few times). We’ll cover that in a future Journal post as well, so keep checking back with TomsMaHauL.com. It’s keeping us busy, trying to post so many rv journeys that we’ve enjoyed, over the years.
