Kilgore, Texas – Texas Broadcast Museum & Derrick Lighting Ceremony

Kilgore, Texas has been a destination of ours at different times over the years. We’ve been to restaurant/bars in the area to enjoy “live” bands, shopping, auto racing at Lone Star Speedway and oil boom displays.

One of the recent times that we’ve been in the area, we’ve discovered the Texas Broadcast Museum. Tom has worked in the broadcast industry for over 40 years, and this museum peaked our interest. As with many museums, this one is also, a work in progress. There were plenty of vintage (working) televisions, radios, record players and the like. The owner of the museum was happy to demonstrate many things, and provide more information about anything in the museum. We enjoyed viewing an old ESPN mobile unit, looking throught the camera used at the infamous murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, a fully functioning television studio and everything worked perfectly in the old radio studio (that peaked Tom’s interest, as he remembered working in very similar studios in his early radio career).

Among the huge displays of various types of broadcasting, is a full-functioning old radio studio. Tom worked in very similar looking studios during his 40+ years in the radio business.

The completely restored Dumont Telecruiser was very interesting to learn about, and enjoy the view from inside and out.

This museum is dedicated to recognizing the broadcast services throughout the state of Texas. This must be one of the largest broadcast museums in our nation, and possibly one of the largest in the world. There is so much to look at, and there is a lot of enjoyment going down memory lane through the years of broadcasting.

Tom bought a shirt & mug, as proceeds help the Texas Broadcast Museum. The mug is Tom’s daily coffee sippin’ mug whenever we are at our place of humble abode (our “stick & bricks” – also known as our house).

Teri’s video of the downtown Kilgore lighting of the derricks for Christmas season. These are just the derricks in front of us. There are many other derricks that were a part of the lighting ceremony. Huge crowd! The live music, famous Kilgore Rangerettes , arts & crafts & food trucks were enjoyed by all.
The festival & derrick lighting ceremony for Christmas season in Kilgore, was a very enjoyable evening.
Who stops to read road-side Historical markers? Tom does that a lot. This was a marker describing the world’s richest acre in Kilgore.
