IndyCar & NASCAR Truck Racing @ Texas Motor Speedway

Tom at the TMS IndyCar inspection station

Every June, for over 2 decades, we’ve been in our Texas Motor Speedway RV spot for the IndyCar and NASCAR Truck races. Teri’s birthday is in June, and the racing is just the icing on the cake that month every year. We’ve been NASCAR fans for decades, but we also keep up with other forms of racing like IndyCar, Formula 1, NHRA along with local and regional dirt track racing. Every June is the opportunity for us to enjoy the IndyCar experience. The IndyCar Series is very fan-friendly and we enjoy our time in the IndyCar garage, seeing their technology up close, along with seeing the race cars go through inspection, and then we’re on pit road for qualifying. Our youngest son, Tim was on a business trip in the DFW area in June, and once his work was completed, he made his way to our Texas Motor Speedway campground. We went to the ticket office and purchased Tim’s pit pass. Tim enjoyed his time strolling through the IndyCar garage and checking out the race cars as they prepared for qualifying.

We were on pit road for, both, the NASCAR Truck Series & IndyCar Series qualifying events. Tim couldn’t stay for the Friday night NASCAR Truck race, as he had to get back to Louisiana to work on Saturday, but Tim enjoyed the Friday afternoon of seeing the race cars and trucks up-close. Friday night, we had fresh batteries in our scanner, with headphones and splitter, packed and ready in the bag, along with a bag of a bag of Buc-ee’s Beaver Nuggets & other snacks and our seat cushions. After Teri’s tasty supper at the motorhome, we caught the tram to our gate at the track for the NASCAR Truck race. The tram ride with race fans can be quite entertaining, in it itself, sometimes. We like to be in our seats for the pre-race driver introductions, waving at the drivers as they go by, followed by other activities, and finally, the pre-race prayer and National Anthem. Then, start the engines, wave the green flag and let’s go racing! The NASCAR Truck races at Texas Motor Speedway have always been exciting!

BELOW: Teri captured a video of the first lap of an IndyCar race at Texas Motor Speedway (May 2021). We love when the green flag waves, and hearing the cars get on the gas pedal, and work their way up to full-song...

During the week, while we’re at Texas Motor Speedway (3 times a year), there are a few moments of some down time, when we go to the nearby town of Roanoke, where we’ve have found our way through the shops and dining. We’ve enjoy great fried chicken dinners at Babe’s, and tasty BBQ at Hard Eight in Roanoke, but we’ve enjoyed some of the other dining choices in the area. We’ve also been to other places that are within a short distance of the track. Even looking around in Buc-ee’s, across from the track, can take up an hour or two.

The track, itself, has a great souvenier/gift shop, and even a 7-11 store on the premises, serving the many race fans that camp at the track like we do. A cold 7-11 Slurpee is perfect during the warm June race week, but there are all of the other offerings of 7-11, including firewood for the campground campfires during the cooler April and November NASCAR weekends. During our many times staying at Texas Motor Speedway, we have also made our way to the Fort Worth Stockyards Historic District and north of the track to Denton. Where ever we go off to, we’re always back in plenty of time for any of the racing activities on the track. Teri has, actually, been in a race car going 175mph around Texas Motor Speedway. A smile will quickly appear on Teri’s face, when we share that memorable time with others.

Teri (aka Tierney) quickly grabbed her camera to take this photo on I-35W South, between Denton and Texas Motor Speedway. Teri is usually amazed when Tom passes anyone at all on the interstates, but passing this was, truly, amazing.

After dinner at Rosa’s (Mexican restaurant across from the race track), we returned to our Texas Motor Speedway RV spot and did a lot of walking around the campground (to walk off the great food that we enjoyed). It was great to meet folks along our stroll around the campgrounds. Then, it was “sit a spell” time under the awning @ the TomsMaHauL motorhome.

As far as preparing the motorhome times of dry camping (or boondocking) at Texas Motor Speedway, we spend a few days prior to those trips, stocking the fridge/freezer, loading our clothes, cleaning inside and out of the motorhome, preparing the holding tanks and fresh water tank fill up, checking the house batteries and tire pressures along with checking the oil & excercising the on-board generator etc. We like to have everything checked and prepared for a trouble free drive, and stay, everytime that we go off in the Tom’sMahaul, to (hopefully) avoid facing any issues when we’re enjoying our times away.
