A few weeks before we were set to go to Texas Motor Speedway for an April NASCAR race weekend, we would leave 4 or 5 days earlier, and go enjoy the sights and sounds of Austin, Texas. We stopped for a night at Fernbrook RV Park near Longveiw, to do some last minute preparations for the week and a half (on the road) ahead. Then on Good Friday, the Tom’sMaHaul rolled to Georgetown – 30 minutes north of Austin. We reserved 3 nights at the Berry Springs RV Park in Georgetown.
We drove the Jeep into Austin on different days, and one of the evenings was to enjoy a band that we first saw at a Music City Texas Theater in Linden, Texas, during the years that the T. Bone Walker Blues Festivals were held Linden. The Peterson Brothers are a couple of young brothers that are very talented musicians, and have a great band supporting them. They were performing at an Austin club one night, and we enjoyed their performance, and were impressed with the bands that opened for the Peterson Brothers Band.
We spent one afternoon/evening, enjoying the scene on the famous 6th Street in downtown Austin. There were many bars, shops and restaurants and “live” music venues.
We spent time strolling around Austin’s original, and iconic, hotel – The Driskill. The History of the hotel, and structural work with art inside, was amazing. We dined upstairs in the hotel restaurant/bar, and the food & service were excellent.
Another afternoon was spent seeing the Texas State Capitol Building and other downtown sites.
Teri and Tom shared a GIANT chicken fried steak with the fixins, at the legendary Threadgill’s of Austin, and enjoyed a great conversation with one of the owners. There are photos and memorabilia throughout the restaurant of the many stars that have performed at Threadgill’s over the years. One of those stars has been one of Tom’s favorite blues/rocks artists – Stevie Ray Vaughan.
We went to the other side of the bridge in Austin, to visit the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue, and enjoy the walking trail along Riverside Drive.
At dusk that evening, Teri and Tom were on the Congress Avenue Bridge with our umbrella because that is the time of day when a million bats fly out from under the bridge and over a huge crowd gathered there to view their night flight. The umbrella was used to keep bat poop (also called “guano”). Million bat info HERE
We, surely, will return to Austin, Texas, as there was so much to see and do throughout the city, as well as surrounding area.
