Lake Hawkins, Texas

-Along Highway 80, Between Gladewater & Mineola, Is A Wonderful Place On Our Do-Over List-

This place is on our “do over” list. This is, usually, one of our stops when we’re rolling west from Louisiana through Texas. Lake Hawkins RV Park is a great stop along the way. We’ve noticed additional RV spots being constructed, and many improvements around this very well cared for Wood County, Texas park. 3 generations of a wonderful family work to maintain and improve this place. The lady at the entry gate was very welcoming, pleasant and helpful, and her son and daughter-in-law along with the children in the family, worked all around the property. We noticed excellent team work among this family. They work very hard around the entire park (rv spots, boat launch, kayak & canoe rentals, well cared for trail, volleyball, sandy beach, cabins & so many other wonderful features!)
Many times, with some planning ahead, we’re fortunate to get our favorite RV spot. For RVers planning a trip to Lake Hawkins RV Park, we recommend to book some weeks ahead. The power supply at our RV spot provided excellent power to our coach. We used our on-board water, but the water supply for rv spots provide great water pressure and quality. There are some full hook-up spots available, but a well-kept dump station is provided as you exit. We usually take care of the dumping duties when we return to the place that we store Teri’s TomsMaHauL motorhome. “Well! Hello there!” says Tom. Every morning, these 5 ducks paid us a visit at our Lake Hawkins RV spot. Tom told Teri “Here comes Curly, Moe, Larry & Shemp accompanied by Sergeant Schultz”. The Sergeant Schultz duck sounded like it was quacking “I KNOW NOTHING!”. Tom enjoys the Three Stooges and Hogan’s Heroes reruns that are aired on TV these days.
We always enjoy some early morning coffee & conversation every time that we visit Lake Hawkins
Tom enjoys another quiet morning in our Lake Hawkins RV Park spot. Along with the various ducks, we saw a few eagles, hawks, turkey buzzards, scissor tailed flycatchers and other birds flying around.
Tom was in need of haircut during this visit. It looks like a lizard was considering an excursion into all of that hair. Tom was stunned for a second, when Teri showed him this photo, as Tom called it “fishing bait”. Teri revealed to Tom that it was just a toy lizard that she found on one of the picnic tables next to the sandy beach. By the way, Tom is pointing to an earthen dam next to the beach.
The boat launch was used frequently during our visit. Next to the boat launch are kayaks and canoes that you can use around the lake area. There are some great coves near the park for a great time in kayak and canoes. Teri told Tom to go pose for a photo on the deck at the boat launch. Teri kept telling Tom to “back up a little bit more please”, but Tom was wise to that trick.
Lake Hawkins RV Park has excellent burning firewood available. Tom has called Teri the “Fire Queen” over the years, and during this visit to Lake Hawkins RV Park, the temperatures were perfect to use our RV spot fire pit.
Tom at the campfire in our RV spot overlooking Lake Hawkins. There’s a lot space between RV spots, and while we burn the fire, we enjoy viewing the lake, as well as the activities around the well-groomed beach, boat launch, volleyball area and earthen dam.
A well groomed park trail lead us to a bridge, as the trail ended up near the park’s rental cabins.

There is an Italian restaurant, merely minutes from the park. One evening, we rolled the Jeep Cherokee to Taste of Italy By The Lake restaurant, and enjoyed some of the tastiest lasagna, garlic bread, salad with house dressing, Stromboli & more. It was so much food, for a very reasonable price, that we ended up taking some of the food back to Bossier City, Louisiana with us, as our lunch once we returned to our “place of humble abode” (aka sticks n’ bricks). In Tom’s words “this is just EXCELLENT Italian food”. The menu and more info on Taste of Italy By The Lake HERE
