Petryoglyphs Near Albuquerque

  • New Mexico “Land of Enchantment”-
  • Climbed Boca Negra Canyon Wall to View Petroglyphs
  • Albuquerque Rio Grande River-

On I-40 West, there was a big sign crossing over the enitre interstate, that read “Land of Enchantment” which signalled that we were in New Mexico. From Amarillo to Albuquerue was a pleasant drive. As always, we just took our time while singing along with the songs on the radio & Teri enjoyed taking photos of the scenery out of the big front windshield.

Teri enjoyed taking photos from her seat in the Tom’sMaHaul. Tom wiped off that yucky bug splatter on the windshield @ the next stop.
The wind sock on the sign is sagging, but there were times of stout winds during the TomsMaHaul journey through the Texas panhandle & New Mexico. Know when to say when, if it’s too windy to drive, but Tom never had to say “when” through the “Land of Enchantment”

We fueled up the motorhome on the east side of Albuquerque and stayed in an RV park near I-40 on the west side of the city. Once we settled into our RV spot, Teri said “It’s time to get going”. We planned all of our destinations with Tom’s 3-30 rule. “I drive 330 miles, or stop at 3:30pm (whichever comes first)“. That rule works great, because there’s time to go see some sights before dark.

Within a half hour of the rv park was the Petroglyph National Monument park, and after going into the infomation center & gift shop, we continued to the Boca Negra Canyon. We walked up the side of the canyon, stopping to look at the petroglyphs. There are about 100 petroglyphs that can be viewed along the walking trail, and many can be viewed up-close. Petroglyphs are rock carvings that range in age from 300 to 2,500 years old. We’ve seen these petroglyphs on episodes of the Ancient Aliens television show, and it was cool to see them in person.

By the look on Tom’s face, he’s thinking too hard as he is wondering what was the stone artist’s inspiration on that old petroglyph?

Leaving the Petroglyph National Monument park & Boca Negra Canyon, we wanted to see what the Rio Grande River looked like in this part of New Mexico. We’ve known that the Rio Grande River separates Mexico with Texas, but didn’t know that it took a turn this far north in New Mexico. More on the Rio Grande in Albuquerque HERE

We made it back to the motorhome before dark, as Tom spent a half hour to clean off the front of the motorhome, to prepare for the next day of driving. With limited time, during our journey westward, and only having one day in this area, we did put some places on our bucket list to see the next time that we return through this region, including the Unser Racing Museum

After the Albuquerque stay, we were up early and back on I-40 West through New Mexico.
Next stop: Arizona
We enjoyed the view from Teri’s TomsMaHaul windshield as we continued our journey.
