Geaux Tigers! TomsMaHauL Family Road Trip To Baton Rouge

LSU Football season is always when memories are made. Our road trips to some LSU home games in Baton Rouge, have always resulted in good memories.

Our oldest son made a video –  Justin’s video with the LSU band will get ya’ fired up for GEAUX-TIME!!!

The last time that our family was a part of an LSU road trip journey, had Tom spending a Monday afternoon checking the motorhome systems and other preparations. The family would, all, be meeting up at the motorhome around lunch on Thursday, to enjoy the ride south to Baton Rouge.

Our sons and their ladies enjoyed the ride, watching the motorhome TV and groovin’ to the tunes. Tim & Justin were the DJs, playing our song requests from their phones over the coach sound system. I-49 to Opalousas was a smooth ride, but Hwy 190 to Baton Rouge can be a bit bumpy in some areas. Be advised to drive the speed limit on Highway 190. Tom’s eyes are always on the road ahead, especially in the congested Baton Rouge traffic. Tom is fully aware, that there is precious cargo onboard the TomsMaHauL motorhome.

When we go to the LSU home games, we’ve stayed at the Baton Rouge KOA in Denham Springs, Louisiana. We’ve always experienced a friendly welcome at the registration desk. They offer full hookups. (incuding cable), swimming pool, hot tub/sauna, minature golf & other amenities that we’ve taken advantage of. There’s a Bass Pro Shops around the corner.

We spent Friday, loading into the Jeep (that we pull behind the motorhome) to go explore the sites, including a visit to the Louisiana State Capitol building. It is the tallest state capitol building in the U.S. and the view from the top is great on a clear day. On the main floor of the building, between the chambers, you can find the bullet holes in the wall in the location where “The Kingfish”, Huey Long, was gunned down in 1935?

A lunch break on Friday was spent at the legendary TJ Ribs , where LSU’s first Heisman Trophy (1959-Billy Cannon) is on display. The ribs are always excellent with very good service. There is now a statue of Billy Cannon near Death Valley.

Statue of Billy Cannon on the LSU campus. The first Heisman Trophy that an LSU player was awarded, occurred during the 1959 LSU football season (the year Tom was born).

Family has also explored the beautifully restored Old Louisiana State Capitol building.

Tom stood at the podium in the Old Lousiana State Capitol building. Tom is known for speaking to anyone who’ll show some interest. In this case, it was just our family in attendance, unless there were ghosts in those empty chairs.
The decor and restoration throughout the Old Louisiana State Capitol building is amazing!

Some of the family let us know that the time was “beer:30”. We went to Tin Roof Brewing near the LSU campus, where some of the family enjoyed beer as we watched RVers roll to their season RV spots on the campus.

Our son Justin was the photographer for this photo of Tom & Teri @ Tin Roof Brewing in Baton Rouge

Saturday is always game day. While on the campus, we found our reserved tailgating spot.

Sons, Justin and Tim, grilled some burgers & sausages, under the supervision of Regan & Missy, while enjoying beverages. We all enjoyed fun conversation and observing the activity around us.

As it was getting closer to game time, we started our stroll towards Tiger Stadium (popularly knows as Death Valley).

One of the stops on the way to the stadium is to visit Mike The Tiger in his habitat. Mike gets some rest now, but will start strutting around and showing his teeth when it’s feeding time (game time).

Watching the LSU band march to the stadium with the players is usually where we end up, as the excitement builds for the game. Justin’s exciting LSU Band video HERE

Death Valley (Tiger Stadium) is always amazing to see, when we first enter the walkway near our seating area. The view down on the field, and around the stadium, gets us fired up! At this game, it was fun to sit near the end zone where the LSU band and student section are located (and at times we heard some funny chants from the student section).
