Ezekiel Airship in Pittsburg, Texas

Was it the REAL First Manned Flight BEFORE The Wright Brothers?

Tom wanted to learn more about the possibility that the Ezekiel Airship flew before the Wright Brothers were credited with the first flight.

The first time that we visited Pittsburg, Texas, the Tom’sMaHaul motorhome was in a spot at Barefoot Bay Marina & RV Resort on Lake Bob Sandlin. We had fun doing a little dancing with a “live” band performing on the property, and enjoyed watching folks play sand volleyball, but also enjoyed browsing the store and watching boats launch to enjoy a day on the lake.

The ride to nearby Pittsburg, Texas lead us to the North Texas Rural Heritage Center & Museum . The ticket price also gets you freedom to tour the old home, storage barn and area of Farmstead that is close-by. The museum has many great displays of days gone by along with old tractors and classic cars, but something that we found quite interesting was the Ezekiel Airship. Rumor has it that this manned airship flew in 1902 in Pittsburg, Texas, which would have meant that it flew a year before the Wright Brothers famous “first flight” in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The Ezekiel Airship was the brainchild of Burrell Cannon (a local Baptist minister), who had a understanding of engineering principles and held patents on several different inventions, including marine propellers, windmills and cameras. It was said that Mr. Cannon was inspired by the Bible and the Book of Ezekiel as this airship was based on a wheel within a wheel. The airship’s design includes a 3 part wing made of fabric and was powered by 4 sets of paddle wheels and a 4 cylinder gas engine, as the pilot sat in the center of the machine. The original aircraft was to be transported by train to the World’s Fair in St. Louis (Mo.), but was destroyed by a severe storm near Texarkana. A full-sized replica is on display in the North Texas Rural Heritage Center & Museum. On another journey to this area, Teri & Tom were joined by (son) Tim and his fiance Missy, and enjoyed the museum and learning more about the Ezekiel Airship.

While in Pittsburg, the family enjoyed some food and beverages at the Historic Pittsburg Feed and Seed and Anvil Brewing Company.

We enjoyed some “Redneck Sushi” @ Pittsburg Feed & Seed & Anvil Brewing
