Cadillac Ranch Investigation

  • What does Cadillac Ranch & the Great Pyramid of Giza Have in Common?
  • Also more on the Aurora, Texas UFO crash site

For 4 days/nights of boondocking in our Texas Motor Speedway campground spot, and running the onboard generator for several hours a day, we wanted to make sure that Teri’s Tom’sMaHaul had a full tank of gas. Across from the race track, on Hwy 114, is a Buc-ee’s location, where there is plenty of room for RVs to pull into the many fueling areas. After gassing up the rig, and pulling forward into the huge parking lot, we strolled inside of Buc-ee’s. We’ve been to the location in Terrell, Texas several times, but this newer Buc-ee’s seems even larger. Our experiences at Buc-‘ees locations have always been good, with great service inside, clean restrooms, food selections and so many reasonably priced items. We always leave with something that has “Buc-ee’s” on it. The Buc-ee’s Beaver Nuggets are a favorite snack to munch on while travelling.

The Tom’sMaHaul headed west on 114, and we considered stopping in Aurora, Texas, where in 1897, it was reported that a UFO hit a windmill and crashed on a farm. The stories that we’ve read and seen on television shows, mention that an alleged alien died in the UFO from the crash, and the alien is buried in an unmarked grave in Aurora. We were more eager to get to Amarillo, so we passed on the Aurora stop, but I’m sure that we’ll make it to Aurora at some point, as it is not far from Texas Motor Speedway (we’re at the track 3 times a year, every year). The drive to Amarillo was smooth with no issues. We fueled the motorhome along I-40 on the east side of Amarillo, and continued on to the west side, where we had booked our RV spot at Oasis RV Resort . This is a very well maintained rv park with plenty of amenities and welcoming staff. After 4 days of boondocking (dry camping) at TMS, we had planned for the next stop to be a nice place, and have everything that we needed to prepare the motorhome for the rest of our westward journey. The half-buried motorhome, when pulling into Oasis RV Resort, caught our attention. Half-buried stuff must be a “thing” around here?

What we saw when we stopped to check in at Oasis RV Resort in Amarillo

Only about a mile away, around the corner from the rv park on the I-40 service road, is the famous Cadillac Ranch. Just pull up your car, get out and walk through a farmed field, to see what is left of 10 half-buried (nose first) Cadillacs. When they were originally buried, the cars were either running, used or junk cars. Originally half-buried in 1974, the sculpture was done to recognize the end of the tail-fin cars. The Cadillacs that were buried, range from the 1949 to 1963 model years. People pose for selfies and other photos, but many have spray painted their thoughts on the cars over the years. Teri spray painted “T-N-T 40” on one of the Cadillacs, honoring Tom & Teri’s 40 anniversary. Supposedly, the Cadillacs are buried at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza. Teri added more spray paint to those Cadillacs in honor of TnT’s 40th anniversary

On our return trip from our westward journey, we stayed at Oasis RV Resort, and were planning to go to nearby Palo Duro Canyon , but there was 60-70mph wind gusts and a horrible dust storm, which had us booking an extra night in our rv spot. We’ll visit Palo Duro Canyon the next time that we get up that way. We did go to the famed Big Texan Steak Ranch on the east side of Amarillo, and saw where people try to eat a 72oz steak (w/ the fixins) within an hour. You’ve seen the giant billboard for this place, along I-40, if you’ve ever driven through Amarillo. No way were we going to attempt the 72oz steak challenge, but we did enjoy a delicious steak. The strolling musicians made it to our table and played a few songs for us. They were a couple of cowboys, with one on guitar and the other was a fiddle player. They asked what we’d like to hear, and since we were in Texas (where Bob Wills is still the king – like you’ve heard in the old Waylon Jennings song), we suggest a Bob Wills song. The fiddle player at our table, played it perfectly! That was a pleasant 40th Anniversary treat of us! We enjoyed some conversation with those two cowboy musicians and we gave them a generous tip.

Teri spotted The Big Texan Steak Ranch when we pulled into Amarillo.
Tom said that he misunderstood the GPS, and had to turn around in the Jiffy Cleaners parking lot. Teri saw the sign and smiled, knowing Tom was suggesting that this would be a good photo op.
Special thanks to sister Mary for our 40th anniversary coffee mugs
